Students: verify your institutions

first_imgHigher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande has urged potential students to contact the department’s call centre to verify the existence of private educational institutions before enrolling. The minister said there were bogus institutions which were not registered with the Department of Education and were therefore not legitimate. Some institutions also offered certain subjects in order to get students to register but ended up teaching other subjects. This was in a bid to get more money from students. He said potential students should call 0800 87 22 22 to check if the institution was in fact registered with the department and what subjects they were registered to offer. The minister was speaking in Pretoria on Thursday at the launch of the Green Paper for Post-School Education and Training, which is aimed at aligning the post-school education and training system with South Africa’s overall development agenda.Earlier this week, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the police would be clamping down on bogus institutions.Operations will be carried out across the country targeting unregistered schools, colleges and universities, and the special investigative team which probes such institutions is to be beefed up.Source: SANews.co.zalast_img read more

General Motors announces 20 for B20 in its diesel vehicle lineup

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest General Motors is taking bold steps to expand the U.S. diesel vehicle market beyond its traditional stronghold in full-size pickups, and providing more options than ever before for customers to reap the additional benefits of fueling up with B20 biodiesel blends, America’s Advanced Biofuel. With eight new diesel vehicle options hitting the roadways in 2017–2018, General Motors now offers a full line-up of 20 different diesel models, from passenger cars, to pickups and SUVs, to commercial vans and low cab forward trucks — all of which are approved for use with B20.John Schwegman, Director of Commercial Product and Medium Duty Product for General Motors, delivered the welcome news to an enthusiastic crowd at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in San Diego.“Diesel propulsion deserves wider consideration by fleet managers across the country,” Schwegman said.  “With biodiesel production and retail distribution expanding, and so many proven benefits, we believe more fleets will embrace the technology as part of their sustainability plans. If our diesel customers fueled exclusively with biodiesel, we estimate that consumption of petroleum-based fuels would be reduced by hundreds of million gallons annually.”GM’s announcement, along with additional new diesel model introductions this year, sends a strong signal that diesel remains an important option for meeting the current and future needs of U.S. drivers. Including 2017 and 2018 models, Chevrolet and GMC will offer one of the largest portfolios of vehicles capable of running on B20, a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80% ultra-low sulfur diesel.GM Fleet’s B20 Capable Options Include:Chevrolet Express full-size vans (Cargo, Passenger, Cutaway)Chevrolet Low Cab Forward commercial truckChevrolet Colorado mid-size pickupChevrolet Silverado (2500HD, 3500HD, Chassis Cab) pickupsChevrolet Equinox crossover vehicleChevrolet Cruze (Sedan, Hatchback) passenger carsGMC Savana (Cargo, Passenger, Cutaway) full-size vansGMC Sierra (2500HD, 3500HD, Chassis Cab) pickupsGMC Canyon mid-size pickupGMC Terrain crossover vehicleIn 2018, Chevrolet will add a fifth diesel-powered truck line: a new Class 4/5 conventional cab truck being developed jointly with Navistar.“General Motors is a shining example of a company that is getting it right by continuing to invest in new technology diesel engines to meet consumer demands for powerful, clean and fuel-efficient vehicles capable of running on clean, renewable B20 biodiesel blends,” said Donnell Rehagen, CEO of the National Biodiesel. “We applaud GM for its efforts, and look forward to partnering with you in your continued support for biodiesel as your diesel vehicle product line continues to expand.”last_img read more

Kynetx: Powerful Cross-Platform Tool for Creating Firefox, IE & Chrome Extensions

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting frederic lardinois Kynetx offers developers a single platform for building extensions for multiple browsers. Developers write their code in Kynetx’s own rule-based language and the service builds the actual extensions. Originally, Kynetx only supported Firefox and Internet Explorer, but a few days ago, the company also announced support for Google Chrome. Thanks to this, developers can now use Kynetx’s AppBuilder tool to build and deploy custom extensions for the three top browsers that offer a built-in plugin architecture. For now, of course, only the Windows version of Chrome supports extensions, but extension support for the OSX and Linux version is scheduled to arrive soon. Kynetx is a universal browser extension that has a few similarities to Greasemonkey. The programming language for the extension is the Kynetx Rule Language (KRL) and the company offers an online editor for writing apps on top of Kynetx. We should note that Kynetx doesn’t allow users to build every type of extension. The system is best suited for building plugins that add additional information to a website. Kynetx’s extensions use Action Cards to augment these sites. One example for such a plugin is this app that reminds users when a company offers a discount through the U.S. automobile services group, AAA. For some more details about the company, have a look at this video interview Robert Scoble did with the company’s founder and CTO. The company also offers a good tutorial and documentation here.AppBuilder Tour View more presentations from knightfour. Production Quality Over Cost: What Really Generates Engaging Video Advertising

first_imgHow to Get Started in China and Have Success How OKR’s Completely Transformed Our Culture Tags:#video Perhaps the biggest lesson that marketers have learned in the last few years is that throwing money at marketing tactics doesn’t necessarily deliver a relational return for the investment. Instead, even with the leanest of budgets, today’s marketing investments deliver a greater return when they are thoughtfully conceptualized and executed. That’s why many marketers have ditched high-cost, glossy print advertising for lower cost digital ad formats that reach a targeted audience. Now, the same thought process should be applied to creating video ads. According toWistia, a video software company, production cost is not the driving factor for video success. Instead, it’s all about the quality, which according to Wistia’s report, “Does Production Quality Matter in Video Advertising?”, includes authentic storytelling and valuable information.Testing a HypothesisAfter producing hundreds of videos for clients, Wistia began to see a pattern in the results. Often, it wasn’t the expensive, glossy videos that were the most well-received by audiences. This led them to theorize that video cost didn’t always equate to video success. Instead, a company could spend far less and potentially generate greater results, delivering higher ROI despite the limited budget.Wistia went to work to test this hypothesis. They created the One Ten One Hundred research project in partnership with Sandwich Video. Three video ads were produced with similar messages but significantly different budgets. The three budgets were $1,000, $10,000, and $100,000.To determine which video produced the greatest ROI, Wistia used two key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs included Cost Per Install and Cost Per 25% View. There were three different ad formats used to further the findings: direct response video ads, sequential ads, and video carousel ads.Wistia also wanted to ensure that the results were directly related to cost versus the ad format and platform. Similar audiences were targeted across platforms like YouTube and Facebook. To see more about the research beyond the report, Wistia produced a documentary called One, Ten, One Hundred where you can see how each video was made. The Results Indicate It’s Not About the SpendThe research found that the $10,000 video ad performed twice as well across all ad formats compared to the $1,000 and $100,000 video ads. The $10,000 video only had about half the Cost Per Install (CPI) compared to the other video ads. For example, on YouTube, the $10,000 video ad had an average CPI of $6.66 versus greater than $10 for the other video ads. These results were even compelling when measured on Facebook. For example, the $10,000 video ad had a Cost Per Install on Facebook of $23.57 versus  $77.54 for the $100,000 video ad.A highly polished production doesn’t mean a larger audience feels engaged. If anything, those that participated in the test were less impressed with the $100,000 ad. Instead, the participants preferred the $10,000 video ad because they more closely connected to the storyline. Also, they liked how the product was presented in a way where they could see how to use it. The participants even related more to the $1,000 video ad, which was created on an iPhone. In financial terms, Wistia spent $1.09 on Facebook to get one viewer to watch 25% of the $1,000 video ad but $1.53 to get the same impression from the $100,000 video ad. This meant that the average Cost Per Install for the $1,000 video ad was 30% less than the most expensive video ad. Therefore, the ROI on the $100,000 video ad just wasn’t there. Most importantly, the participants liked how the mid-range budget video ad didn’t feel like a sales technique. This contrasted the reaction to the most expensive one that immediately made them connect the glossy presentation with those brands that have only ever tried to sell them something.Social Media Channels Measure Video Ad Results DifferentlyAnd, it turns out that social media channels like YouTube aren’t necessarily impressed with what others think about video ads. In fact, it turned out that YouTube didn’t give any preference to the best-performing video ad. The tests showed that the ad ordered first in a group of uploaded videos got the most impressions while the ad at that bottom of that same group had the fewest impressions. The results are even more complicated on Facebook, which doesn’t offer a clear view of what defines an actual video view. This is because it appears that just the act of scrolling past an autoplay video triggers a view result in the Facebook ads platform.Finding the Right Video Ad PartnerNow, small businesses don’t have to worry about how they are going to pay for a Hollywood style film crew for their next video ad. It turns out they aren’t necessary for digital marketing success. The better approach is to work from a much smaller budget, putting more resources into the concept, message, and storytelling techniques to more deeply engage with audiences. From Jason Bourne to Indiana Jones, This Is the Secret to Better Action Scenes

first_imgToday, we’ll discuss how to create a more cohesive action sequence when dealing with hand-to-hand combat, as well as long-range action scenes.Imagine a movie where in every important dialogue scene, the actors just yell at each other. They blow out the audio levels, their words slur together, they talk over each other, and despite catching a few words here and there, you can’t really understand what’s happening. Or, imagine a dialogue scene in which the words are crystal clear but because of the cinematography, you’re not quite sure who’s talking to whom, where they’re supposed to be looking, or if the actors were even on the same set together. To me, either scenario is some kind of awful. We would never accept this chaos in our film’s important dialogue scenes, so why do some filmmakers find it acceptable to film action sequences with the same disregard?I’ve discussed in detail the first scenario when applied to action scenes (shaky camera, hard to follow action, etc.) in the article Directing Fight Cinematography: The Right Way and the Wrong Way. In this article, I want to cover the second scenario, wherein the action feels disjointed. You may be able to clearly tell what’s happening in each shot but, as a whole, it feels a bit lifeless, like one person just talking to a wall. I’ll talk about how to create a more cohesive action sequence by focusing on engaging your opponents and propelling the scene forward through cause and effect.Action scenes happen in a film because a character must overcome an obstacle, like a dangerous scenario or an evil villain. The action is exciting because our hero must engage in some form of physicality to accomplish his goal. However, if we can’t capture that momentum, it ends up feeling like random shots strung together. This concept can be more easily conveyed with a gun fight. Watch this clip from the film Mile 22.Image via STX Entertainment. We rarely, if ever, get any kind of over the shoulder, where Mark Wahlberg (or his allies) are firing at the enemy. There are few shots of heroes and villains together. Aside from one of the last shots, this sequence almost feels like two different scenes mashed together. Compare this with the sniper scene from The Bourne Identity, the first Bourne film.At first glance, this scene may look similar to Mile 22, but there is one huge difference: each of the opponent’s actions affects the other. In other words, there is engaging cause and effect. We see the reflection of the gas explosion and its smoke obscures the sniper’s vision. We see and understand how Jason’s tactics work and affect his opponent. There is continuous cause and effect that determine each player’s decisions, unlike in Mile 22, where we almost have to be reminded that Mark Wahlberg and company are in danger. This engagement is one reason the John Wick films are so amazing. Despite the heavy use of firearms, the choreography and cinematography capture Wick continually engaging his foes. We see and feel the cause and effect. The enemies are not some distant, faceless threat – even when they wear literal masks. In fact, you see them all in many shots together. The enemy’s firepower influences Wick’s decisions, engaging the two parties in true combat. Imagine the following scene, but instead of a fluid battle, it’s just a series of close ups on each opponent. Without the momentum of engagement, the scene would feel completely flat.Perhaps one of the best references for great action sequences is Spielberg’s work in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Every action scene is exciting and dynamic. Even on back-to-back viewings, you still get a feeling of anticipation as you watch Indiana Jones fight for his life. Spielberg achieves these exciting and dynamic action scenes by deftly capturing Indy’s engagement with his adversaries. If you’re looking to improve your own action sequences on camera, remember to capture a sense of engagement. Don’t take this to mean your action shots need to be engaging – that’s a given. Your opponents need to literally engage each other, and you must capture this cause-and-effect dynamic on screen. Establish that the actions of the heroes and the villains have consequences that affect the decisions and outcomes of the scene, by having each player react and adapt to the situation. AND, you should seek to have a majority of shots feature BOTH the hero and the villain, especially in long-range fights. Keep these two principles in mind when filming your next action scene and avoid the shot reverse shot formula. And remember, these concepts apply to more than just hand-to-hand and long-rang action scenes! They apply to anything in the action universe where challenging scenes can give short shrift to the pace of the story, like chase scenes and heists.Cover image via Lionsgate.Discover more cinematography and filmmaking tips in these articles:Everything You Need to Know About Chroma Key and Green Screen Footage5 Tips on How to Create a Great Short Documentary FilmMastering the Subtle Techniques of the Zoom and the Punch InChoosing Aspect Ratio: A Guide to Everything You Need to Know7 Tutorials on Adding The “Cinematic” Look to Your Videoslast_img read more

(AP Photo/Chuck Burton)CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni replaced Kenneth Faried in the starting lineup with Eric Gordon on Wednesday night, a move designed to cut down wear and tear on Chris Paul’s body. The reasoning behind the move was D’Antoni doesn’t want Paul chasing point guards like Charlotte’s Kemba Walker all over the court and running off screens this late in the season. Instead, the goal was to have Gordon cover Walker.ADVERTISEMENT Well, that plan got ditched after one half.Paul told D’Antoni at halftime he wanted to guard Walker after the Hornets three-time All-Star erupted for 27 points on 9-of-10 shooting.
