18 men’s and 14 women’s teams from around the country have confirmed their participation for the championships that will run during the independence weekend (four days) in September.President of the PNG Softball Federation, Ralph Tarasomo, said the teams are:Men’s; United Brothers, Yokomo, Bears, Defence (Pom) Manalos, Marlins(Lae), 09ERS, Kalibobo Reds, Rovers (Madang) Manalos West, Kopex (Kimbe) Pythons, Kopex (Gazelle), Overheads, Pirates, Drongos (Mt. Hagen)United Brothers and Bullets of the Kokopo Association have yet to confirm their participation.Women’s; United Sisters, Bears, Gazelle (Pom) Manalos, Elcees, Stormers (Lae) Rovers, Yamilong (Madang) Reds, Kopex (Kimbe) Wewak (TBA) Pirates, Titans (Mt Hagen).He said the men’s and women’s teams from Wewak will be confirmed as soon as their finals are played by the end of this month.“It’s been a long time since Mt Hagen association has hosted a national event after the last championships was held in 1999.“The PNGSF is working closely with the Mt Hagen Softball Association that the playing diamonds are secured and prepared to acceptable standards for the tournament.“We expect the four-day event to draw huge audience as some of the best athletes around the country step up for their clubs in fielding and in batting, which requires special skills.“The prize money for this event will be made known as soon as we secure major sponsors for the championships,” said Tarasomo.Tarasomo finished by saying clubs are advised to contact Harry Keket with regards to the team registration fee of K600. The deadline for fees to be paid is September 2.
