The Lancers swept Allan Hancock, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17, then had their 3-match win streak stopped by host Moorpark, 26-24, 25-23, 25-10.PCC is 3-3 under first-year head coach Mike Terrill. Pasadena will face Moorpark again to open the 8-team, 31st San Diego Mesa Invitational, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 9-10. The second encounter v. the Raiders is Friday at 4 p.m.Terrill talked about how close the first Moorpark meeting was despite it ending with PCC being swept.“We played really well in the opening set and took it to extra points,” he said. “Then we go up 23-20 in the second set, and in a flash we lost our focus. Moorpark scored the next five points, puts us down 2-0, and then the next thing we know we are down 7-1 to start the third set. That’s how fast it can go one way or another in this sport. On the plus side, we really were solid throughout the Hancock victory. Vanessa Lopez, Hannah Clarke and Paige Clingaman all stepped up. Lopez did a great job of passing in the two matches.”PCC has also been fighting with minor injuries that have kept a few players out of action. In the Hancock win, the Lancers attacked a season-best .311 with Clingaman pounding 15 kills (.448) and Lopez adding nine kills and 11 digs. Clarke added 24 assists and served four aces while libero Monica Hernandez had 14 digs. Opposite/MB Chyna Peeler chipped in five kills, four blocks (three solo) and three aces.Against Moorpark, sophomore opposite Shawna Ogata scored a team-best nine kills while Lopez added five kills and 12 digs. Kincade Fire stoked by fierce winds prompts new evacuations, threatens thousands of homes in Northern California

first_imgErin Donalson/iStock(SAN FRANCISCO) — Fanned by ferocious gusts of up to 93 mph, a wildfire burning in Northern California grew to 30,000 acres on Sunday, putting more than 180,000 people under mandatory evacuation as thousands of firefighters battled against odds to save lives, homes and some of the most famous wineries in the world. The Kincade Fire in Sonoma County was just 10% contained Sunday morning as extreme Diablo winds blew embers from the northeast to the southwest in the direction of Santa Rosa, a city of more than 175,000 people that was devastated by the October 2017 Tubbs Fire that caused $1.3 billion in damages and killed 22 people.California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday declared a statewide emergency “due to the effects of unprecedented high-wind events which have resulted in fires and evacuations across the state.”“We are deploying every resource available, and are coordinating with numerous agencies as we continue to respond to these fires. It is critical that people in evacuation zones heed the warnings from officials and first responders, and have the local and state resources they need as we fight these fires,” Newsom said in a statement.Embers from the Kincade Fire were suspected of igniting a blaze Sunday morning in Vallejo, some 56 miles from the epicenter of the blaze in Sonoma County, and prompting the partial closure of Interstate 80. Two other spot fires were burning in Contra Costa County, one near Mount Diablo State Park in Contra Costa County about 100 miles south of the primary fire zone, and the other in Crockett, about a quarter-mile from a NuStar Energy facility that contains multiple crude oil tanks, officials said.Look at how these fires have changed in just two hours! No deaths have been reported.Thousands of homes across Sonoma County were being threatened by embers that could land anywhere the wind blows.Early Sunday morning, embers from the Kincade Fire were suspected in a blaze that destroyed the historic Soda Rock Winery in the Sonoma County town of Healdsburg, about 70 miles north of San Francisco. The winery dates back to 1869.Soda Rock Winery as it burns during the #KincadeFire pic.twitter.com/YBLk1fwEMP— CAL FIRE NEWS (@CalFireNews) October 27, 2019“The challenge is with the high winds coming from the northeast. All the firefighters on the ground are trying to get ahead of it,” Robert Carvalho, a spokesman for Cal Fire, told ABC station KGO-TV in San Francisco while standing near the still-smoldering ruins of the Soda Rock Winery. The Kincade Fire is named after John Kincade Road northeast of Geyserville, where Cal Fire officials say it broke out on Wednesday night. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.Carvalho said about 3,000 firefighters were battling the Kincade Fire on the ground, while helicopters and firefighting jetliners were dumping fire retardant on the blaze from the air.“They’re going around to structures in that area doing structure protection, prepping the homes and just making sure that there’s no one else in those home and everyone has been evacuated,” Carvalho said of Cal Fire ground crews.About 90,000 people were evacuated in the Sonoma County towns of Windsor, Healdsburg, Calistoga, Geyserville, Graton, Guerneville, Jenner and Bodega Bay on Saturday night and evacuation orders were expanded on Sunday morning for about 90,000 more people, including residents of in a northern section of Santa Rosa. Two major hospitals in Santa Rosa were also evacuated.Parts of Highway 101, a major freeway through Sonoma Country, were also closed on Sunday due to blowing embers and debris that made driving dangerous for motorists due to low visibility. The new evacuation orders came after the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. cut power as a precaution to 2.3 million people across 38 counties beginning Saturday evening.“Our town leadership has been evacuated twice from our command center,” Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli told KGO-TV on Sunday morning from a makeshift command post in Santa Rosa.Foppoli said his town of 27,000 residents was completely evacuated on Saturday night.“We executed the single largest evacuation in the history of our town … in about five hours,” Foppoli said. The National Weather Service recorded gusts of up to 93 mph near Healdsburg on Saturday night and said gusts throughout the county were clocked at 50 to 70 mph.“It was the most fierce wind I have ever seen in the 30-plus years I’ve lived in our town,” Foppoli said. “So the concern, obviously, is that wind will bring the fire toward the city.”Winds could gust up to 60 mph in parts of Northern California on Sunday and relative humidity could be as low as 8%, creating extremely critical fire weather and any blaze, new or existing, could grow erratically.Meanwhile, firefighters continued to battle several blazes in Southern California on Sunday, the largest being the Tick Fire in Los Angeles County. The Tick Fire, which started on Thursday afternoon near Santa Clarita, was 65% contained on Sunday after scorching 4,615 acres and damaging 27 structures.Human remains were found in a burned area near Santa Clarita on Saturday, but a preliminary investigation suggested the person had been deceased for over a year, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. Wynn Resorts shares rise after $6 dividend and analyst upgrade

first_imgNEW YORK – Shares of Wynn Resorts Ltd. rose Tuesday after its board announced a $6 dividend and an analyst upgraded the casino resort company, citing a recent dip in shares. Shares gained $7.18, or 5.7 percent, to close at $132.16. The dividend will be paid Dec. 10 to shareholders of record on Nov. 30, the company’s board said. Jefferies & Co. analyst Lawrence Klatzkin upgraded the company to “buy” from “hold” and kept his $152 price target. Shares have fallen 62 percent since Oct. 2. “Recent declines in the price of Wynn stock reflect investor concerns as to the strength of the Macau gaming market,” Klatzkin said in a client note, referring to Wynn’s multibillion operation in the Chinese city. “We continue to see Macau’s gaming market to be strong and forecast it to be on track for a total market size of over $15 billion by the end of 2010.” Beyond Macau, Wynn should continue to do well in Las Vegas, and could potentially enter Japan if it wins a casino license in that country, he said. The company will likely borrow more money to finance its expansion in Macau, but even after the dividend, it will likely have “ample cash balances” of around $1.3 billion, said Morgan Stanley analyst Celeste Brown. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. General Motors announces 20 for B20 in its diesel vehicle lineup

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest General Motors is taking bold steps to expand the U.S. diesel vehicle market beyond its traditional stronghold in full-size pickups, and providing more options than ever before for customers to reap the additional benefits of fueling up with B20 biodiesel blends, America’s Advanced Biofuel. With eight new diesel vehicle options hitting the roadways in 2017–2018, General Motors now offers a full line-up of 20 different diesel models, from passenger cars, to pickups and SUVs, to commercial vans and low cab forward trucks — all of which are approved for use with B20.John Schwegman, Director of Commercial Product and Medium Duty Product for General Motors, delivered the welcome news to an enthusiastic crowd at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in San Diego.“Diesel propulsion deserves wider consideration by fleet managers across the country,” Schwegman said.  “With biodiesel production and retail distribution expanding, and so many proven benefits, we believe more fleets will embrace the technology as part of their sustainability plans. If our diesel customers fueled exclusively with biodiesel, we estimate that consumption of petroleum-based fuels would be reduced by hundreds of million gallons annually.”GM’s announcement, along with additional new diesel model introductions this year, sends a strong signal that diesel remains an important option for meeting the current and future needs of U.S. drivers. Including 2017 and 2018 models, Chevrolet and GMC will offer one of the largest portfolios of vehicles capable of running on B20, a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80% ultra-low sulfur diesel.GM Fleet’s B20 Capable Options Include:Chevrolet Express full-size vans (Cargo, Passenger, Cutaway)Chevrolet Low Cab Forward commercial truckChevrolet Colorado mid-size pickupChevrolet Silverado (2500HD, 3500HD, Chassis Cab) pickupsChevrolet Equinox crossover vehicleChevrolet Cruze (Sedan, Hatchback) passenger carsGMC Savana (Cargo, Passenger, Cutaway) full-size vansGMC Sierra (2500HD, 3500HD, Chassis Cab) pickupsGMC Canyon mid-size pickupGMC Terrain crossover vehicleIn 2018, Chevrolet will add a fifth diesel-powered truck line: a new Class 4/5 conventional cab truck being developed jointly with Navistar.“General Motors is a shining example of a company that is getting it right by continuing to invest in new technology diesel engines to meet consumer demands for powerful, clean and fuel-efficient vehicles capable of running on clean, renewable B20 biodiesel blends,” said Donnell Rehagen, CEO of the National Biodiesel. “We applaud GM for its efforts, and look forward to partnering with you in your continued support for biodiesel as your diesel vehicle product line continues to expand.”last_img read more

India and Britain spar over who will open CWG

first_imgThe Indian government and the office of Britain’s Prince Charles are reportedly sparring over New Delhi’s plans for a “joint inauguration” of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) which will not give the prince a solo role at the October 3 ceremony. The government has reportedly drawn up plans for President Pratibha Patil to declare the sporting event open. Charles, representing Queen Elizabeth who is skipping the event because of the ” sheer volume” of her engagements, will have a similarly important but not singular duty at the ceremony. This has resulted in diplomatic differences between India and Charles’s office even though there is no formal word on the matter yet.Traditionally, the British monarch who heads the Commonwealth of former British colonies, declares these Games open. The role can also be given to her representative.Clarence House, the official residence of the Prince of Wales in London, insisted that Charles will fulfill the duties originally intended for the queen.A spokesperson for Clarence House said, ” The queen has asked the prince to represent her in Delhi, and carry out the same duties she would perform if she was there. He will officially declare the Games open.”Sources in Rashtrapati Bhawan, meanwhile, said that so far they had no intimation about the President inaugurating the Games.New Delhi believes that with the queen not attending the Games, there is a qualitative change in the situation. Sources in the government, who confirmed the development over the ” joint inauguration” issue, said had Elizabeth attended the event, she alone would have received the Queen’s Relay Baton, read out the message to the athletes and declared the Games open. But, it is different now that she will not be in Delhi for the October 3 opening.advertisementDuring the discussions in the government on the opening ceremony, the possibility of a ” joint inauguration” was put on the table. It was reportedly suggested that Patil could be handed over the Queen’s Baton, followed by Charles reading out the Queen’s message and then the President declaring the Games open, the sources said.Another possibility of a “joint inauguration” by the President and Charles was also reportedly discussed. The Queen’s Relay Baton – which is now on its way to Delhi after being carried through Commonwealth countries across the world – also carries the monarch’s message to participating athletes.Speculation among senior government sources is that the last line of the message is ” I declare the Games open”. While Charles is expected to read the message, including this line, President Patil could also declare the Games open, said the sources who did not want to be named. The details of this option are being worked out.Well- placed sources said that the matter is still being negotiated at the highest levels of the two governments to find a way out of the impasse. The discussions have reportedly also included the Commonwealth Games Federation and the CWG Organising Committee. A final decision is expected early this week. This is not the first time that a member of Britain’s royal family – the monarch or her representative – will not inaugurate the Games. There is already a precedent. The 1998 Games at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia were inaugurated by the Malaysian King. On that occasion Edward, the Queen’s third son represented her at the opening ceremony.Diplomats have supported the move for an inauguration of the Games by the President.Former foreign secretary Salman Haider said, “It would be gratifying if the President inaugurates the Commonwealth Games. It will be a matter of pride for the entire country.Prince Charles’s presence on the occasion will be an added dimension.” According to him, Charles has often visited India and his position will not be downgraded in any way if Patil inaugurates the Games.Another top diplomat, former foreign secretary Shashank said the President in her capacity as head of state in the queen’s absence should ” ideally inaugurate” the event.” This will be an honour for India. It is most likely that both governments will work out a formula for a role for Charles that will be acceptable to the British royalty.” The British High Commission in the Capital had earlier said that it was ” delighted” that Charles would represent the queen at the opening ceremony. The implication was that he would take on her full role.Charles will be accompanied by his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. The Prince of Wales is expected to arrive on October 1. He is likely to visit Rajasthan and Punjab during his India visit.advertisementWith input from agencieslast_img read more

Rockets buckle down on Kemba Walker to frustrate feisty Hornets

first_imgCharlotte Hornets’ Kemba Walker, right, and Houston Rockets’ Chris Paul, left, chase a loose ball during the first half of an NBA basketball game in Charlotte, N.C., Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton)CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni replaced Kenneth Faried in the starting lineup with Eric Gordon on Wednesday night, a move designed to cut down wear and tear on Chris Paul’s body. The reasoning behind the move was D’Antoni doesn’t want Paul chasing point guards like Charlotte’s Kemba Walker all over the court and running off screens this late in the season. Instead, the goal was to have Gordon cover Walker.ADVERTISEMENT Well, that plan got ditched after one half.Paul told D’Antoni at halftime he wanted to guard Walker after the Hornets three-time All-Star erupted for 27 points on 9-of-10 shooting. D’Antoni agreed, and the change worked — Paul helped hold Walker to eight points in the second half as the Rockets escaped with a 118-113 win.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine ‍football chiefSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesJames Harden scored 30 points, Clint Capela had 23 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, and the Rockets won their third straight. He will be fine and that is the least of my worries.”ADVERTISEMENT Harden had plenty of support, especially from Capela, who was all over the glass. The Rockets trailed by four entering the fourth quarter but opened with an 18-4 run behind six points from Paul, including four on fall-away mid-range jumpers. The Hornets battled back behind Walker and Jeremy Lamb, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and had a chance to tie with 17 seconds left. Walker missed a leaning 3-pointer from the right wing and the Hornets fouled Harden, who made two free throws to make it a five-point game. Walker missed another 3 with seven seconds left.“Maybe it was some attitude adjustments,” D’Antoni said of his team’s second-half defense. “We just played harder. In the second quarter, we lost our spirit completely and (the Hornets) played well.”The Hornets are a half-game ahead of the Magic in the battle for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.“We just have to stay confident,” Walker said. “We are playing really hard, competing our butts off. first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Leicester boss Claude Puel: We couldn’t get past Cardiff defenceby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLeicester City boss Claude Puel says they couldn’t find a way past Cardiff’s defence for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat.Neil Etheridge pulled off a string of important saves for the visitors, as well as denying James Maddison from the penalty spot with just 15 minutes to play. And while the fixture looked destined to finish goalless, Victor Camarasa curled an effort into the top corner to win it for Neil Warnock’s side.“We started this game with the right mentality,” Puel told LCFC TV after the game. “We knew it would be a tough game against this team – direct play, second balls, long throw-ins, all these things.“We managed our game with interesting moves and chances in the first and second half without finding the clinical edge. It was a shame. Of course, we cannot find the solution to score. We can take this goal but it is not a fair result.“A draw was the minimum and to lose this game for my team and players is harsh. Harsh because they had the right mentality despite tiredness in this busy period. They tried to give their best, to push until the end with a lot of chances.“It’s a shame. I’m sorry for my players and fans because it is not a fair result. We were unlucky, we conceded a fantastic goal and they scored with their chance at the end without the possibility to react. It’s difficult to accept, but that’s football.” last_img read more
