Childhood home of the wife of the client is a combination of Japanese and western style house built in the beginning of Showa era which stands on a hill about 15-minute’s walk from Kamakura station, historic town and tourist destination. It is located on slope of a hill looking down garden in east, verdant environment where wild squirrels run about in trees and flowers. Becoming decrepit 90 years after the construction, the house once faced difficulty in maintaining and surviving with imminent issues of inheritance.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoEnvironment of a building could be transformed once the ownership of the property is transferred, and building and trees torn down. However if measures had not been taken, the cost of maintenance would have increased further for the client. After discussing several options, the client decided to donate their Japanese traditional style and western style house together with the land to Kamakura city as “Former Sakai Residence”, to be preserved as registered tangible cultural property. Furthermore it was decided to be utilized as the office of Kamakura Scenery Preservation Commission and be actively maintained.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoIn the process of donation, part of the lot remained with the client for them to build a new house to live after they have settled inheritance affairs and their children became independent. The design of this project began in this context.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoFrom the remaining lot, Former Sakai Residence, cultural heritage and childhood home of the wife of the client, is located in the north, to which many strangers will be visiting. Therefore on the north of the lot is entrance approach of their new house making use of the well-kept garden of Former Sakai Residence as borrowed scenery. No fence was installed on the border of the lot, and windows are located in the height to mind the views from the visitors.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoOn the other hand, small private garden was designed on the south where terrace windows are facing to create continuity of interior and exterior. Shed roof is sloping north-south and extends eaves over terrace windows to make enough space for hanging out the laundry, drying Japanese plums to make pickles, and other house works, adding practicality to the continuity of interior and exterior.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoWe hear the word, final home, when building a house. However we supposed this house to be not a final home for empty nesters but a house continuing to child generation. This is a concept that the couple arrived at after facing the issue of maintaining wife’s natal home. The exterior form of building was designed simple rectangular to allocate bearing walls in the circumference and leave flexibility in the layout of interior space. Interior walls are Shinkabe (a type of plastered wall in which structural members are exposed) to show the structure and be directly changed. Statutorily, the building is one story, but bearing force of the structure is back-calculated for the building to be re-applied as two-story building if rigid floor is installed on the beams of high ceiling. As a result, haunch form structure was created, holding combining pillars, beams and diagonal braces by plywood, and made characteristic interior.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoFor purpose of maintenance sustainability, light and durable metal siding was selected for exterior wall material. When employing Shinkabe for interior, metal siding could not be employed for exterior side of pillars for legal reason, thus molding made by calcium silicate board and cedar with protective coating was employed. Molding part of the exterior wall will age by the time, and this transformation, we hoped, will bring its modern exterior with metal siding closer to the aged exterior of Former Sakai Residence to stand in harmony.Save this picture!© Toshiyuki YanoProject gallerySee allShow lessUCCA Dune Art Museum / OPEN ArchitectureSelected ProjectsDAS_Lab Office / DAS LabSelected Projects Share Save this picture!© Toshiyuki Yano+ 23Curated by Fernanda Castro Share Architects: Naf Architect & Design Area Area of this architecture project CopyAbout this officeNaf Architect & DesignOfficeFollowProductWood#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesYokosukaJapanPublished on December 13, 2018Cite: “Continuing House / Naf Architect & Design” 12 Dec 2018. Lake Worth rallies around Arms of Hope

first_imgThe Lake Worth community has come together to support a nonprofit, helping the founder, Patrick Livingston, make incredible progress with his vision for Arms of Hope.Livingston will be the first to tell anyone that cooking in the soup kitchen last summer was brutal. There was no air conditioning. The dining area was uncomfortable for guests, too, but now things are much different.“It’s a huge difference, a huge difference. Night and day from when we sat here last year,” Livingston said. There’s a brand new air conditioning system, courtesy of John Westbrook and the Cool team, renovated bathrooms installed by C2 Construction, a new roof thanks to American Roofing and hurricane impact windows, donated by PGT WinGuard and installed for free by T.J. Davis Windows. The upgrades and renovations were all made possible by these generous local business owners.“It was just a freak thing that I talked to Patrick and I said, ‘let me see if we can get’em to donate,’” T.J. Davis, owner of T.J. Davis windows, said.Frankie Quarles, a third-generation roofer and president of American Roofing, donated not one, but two new roofs, one for the soup kitchen and the other for the building next door, which will be used as a future community center.“Patrick is as excited about doing work as I am. Excited to give God be all the glory and that’s the main thing that goes on in this whole operation that’s here,” Quarles said.Arms of Hope is known for feeding hungry stomachs and human spirits, but Livingston has bigger plans.“Feeding the folks is good, but educating them is our goal,” Livingston said.“We have a plan and we have a momentum going forward to convert this into a well-functioning community center,” Cheddi Johnson, owner of C2 Development said.Johnson is the volunteer project manager, overseeing renovations of the adjacent building and organizing other volunteers to help Livingston’s dream become a reality.“It’s a year later and I’m still thanking them,” Livingston said. There is still a lot of work left to do. For people interested in volunteering or donating supplies. The Quantum Foundation also provides financial grants to help fund nonprofits like Arms of Hope. To donate money visit.last_img read more

Matt Kemp’s 30th birthday is cause for Dodgers celebration

first_imgHe’ll soon learn it’s all a matter of perspective. And he certainly wasn’t getting any sympathy from the bunch of middle-aged reporters gathered around his locker before the Dodgers took the field against the San Francisco Giants.Especially after the way he turned on a first-inning Madison Bumgarner fastball and sent it soaring into the thick Los Angeles night for a two-run home run.The blast put the Dodgers up by three runs, and with Zack Greinke delivering eight strong innings and Justin Turner adding two home runs the Dodgers cut down their magic number to win the division to one with a 4-2 victory. They’ll send ace Clayton Kershaw to the mound today hoping to close things out against Tim Hudson. But it all started with Kemp blowing out the candles on his 30th birthday with his 24th home run. “Great birthday present,” he said. “Got a home run and we got the win.”Then he paused for a moment and shook his head.“But man, I’m 30 years old.”We should all be so old.Still, as he glanced around a mostly older Dodgers clubhouse, it was never more clear he’s no longer the wide-eyed kid who showed up here nine years ago with a young man’s mind and body and his whole baseball life in front of him. “It’s weird, time goes by fast, man. That’s why you can’t take anything for granted,” he said. “Nine years here in L.A., I’ve grown in a lot of ways. I got here in L.A. at 21 and now I’m 30 years old.“You just mature as an adult, as a baseball player. As everything.”The years in between have seen the rise and fall of one of the game’s great physical talents, followed by the resurrection of a veteran player who grinds more than glides, picks and chooses more than dominates and takes rather than dictates.Time and injury have fleeced his body of speed and athleticism once considered as imposing as anyone in the game. And the mental toll of overcoming broken bones and surgeries and severe muscle pulls, let alone the uncertainty he’d ever approach a level of play he once took for granted, was especially challenging.“When you get hurt, it’s tough on your mind too, because you don’t know if you can do those same things,” Kemp said. That he’s emerged on the other side still an effective player, if not the force he once was, made his 30th birthday even more poignant than even he imagined. That it arrived in the middle of the biggest Dodgers series of the season, and potentially a day ahead of them celebrating the division championship, wasn’t lost on him.Last year at this time, Kemp was doing everything short of body-part transplants to try and prop himself up in time for the Dodgers’ playoff run. And just when he thought he’d pried open a window big enough to be a postseason factor, he awoke one morning to discover his left ankle had betrayed him again.“I thought I was good, but I woke up one day and I couldn’t walk,” he remembered.Kemp was shut down for the rest of the season. The depleted Dodgers, meanwhile, lost slugger Hanley Ramirez in Game 1 of the National League Championship series and ultimately a chance to play in the World Series after falling to the Cardinals in six games.Kemp watched from the bench, his mind taking him to places his body wouldn’t allow.“I just feel if we were a healthier team, we could have gone a lot further in the playoffs,” he said.He welcomed his 30th year on Earth in a much better place Tuesday, not just physically but mentally.A second-half surge re-activated a bat once one of the most potent in the game, and his 16 home runs, 51 RBIs and .943 OPS after the All-Star break have been particularly important to the Dodgers’ pennant chase. It also provided some much-needed affirmation he could still play at a high level.“I knew it was in there, it just takes time,” Kemp said. “I mean, I had no spring training. I honestly didn’t know what my body would feel like, but as a baseball player you just try to grind through those battles that you have as far as injuries and things like that.”He can’t run like he once did. He’s no longer a center fielder. And he might not be capable of dominating an entire season or prolonged stretch like he did three seasons ago.“Definitely, my game has changed,” he said. But he can still control a game or an at bat. He can still be an asset.Much like he’s been in various games over the second half, including Tuesday when he staked Zack Greinke to a 3-0 lead with his blast off Bumgarner. It’s not the same. It’s taken some getting used to.But Kemp is embracing the dynamics of the 30-year-old version of himself.“You’ve got to find a way to be successful when you’re on the field,” Kemp said. “And I’m still learning how to do that.”Mostly, he’s looking forward to the postseason and beyond.“I still feel like there’s a lot more left in the tank. The last two years, as I’ve always said, have been tough. Especially on my body. But the injuries I had, it took some time, and I feel like they’re getting better and better each day.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img Matt Kemp understood all the words. Making sense of them was another thing entirely.Day one on the other side of 30, it seems, took some getting used to.“It’s just weird to be saying I’m 30,” the birthday boy admitted Tuesday, tugging on his beard. “It just sounds old.”last_img read more

Lack of technical knowhow brought CWG bridge down

first_imgLack of knowledge of a new construction technique and self devised ways to implement the project led to the recent collapse of the foot overbridge at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Delhi government said this after a two-member fact-finding committee submitted its report on the collapse. The September 21 incident – less than a fortnight before the start of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) – had injured at least 27 labourers.According to a statement from the chief minister’s office, the committee blamed UK-based Macalloy that had supplied the bridge without “sufficiently” cautioning about its design constraints. The government also came down heavily upon the constructor implementing the project as well as the Public Works Department (PWD) which was responsible for supervisory failure.”The methodology of the construction was not given by the design consultant. The contractor M/s P and R Infrastructure Private Limited devised its own procedure without any approval,” it said.PWD had given the contract to P and R Infraprojects Ltd for a little over `5 crore. The company was blacklisted by the Delhi government after the mishap. The panel, comprising former CPWD director general H. S. Dogra and IIT professor Ashok Gupta, said the government gave itself (PWD department) and its design consultants a clean chit on the matter. “The enquiry had found no substandard material in the bridge,” it said. The government came down the hardest on the foreign company.”The collapse happened because of the failure of joint of Macalloy suspender bars which had been prescribed as part of design of suspension of deck of the overbridge with the main arch,” it said.advertisementThe committee members recommended the government not to use Macalloy bars in similar projects till there is clearer understanding of how it is to be used. The panel questioned the UK firm’s “change in stand” over certain aspects of the initial drawings of the overbridge.”After the collapse, the UK-based company said it feels that the orientation of the gusset plate were in wrong plane. But no such observations were made by them when the drawings were forwarded to them in April 2010 by M/ s P and R Infra.” Delhi government officials said the PWD will seek a clarification on the issue from Macalloy. The government said the main fault originated in the bars and joints the overbridge was to be suspended from.A thicker gusset plate was used because the recommended size was not available. It reduced the margin of rotation in the joint, contributing to the failure.Rainbow Of Gloom:PWD had sold the footbridge’s ‘rainbow’ design as a first of its kind in DelhiIt was to use a prefabricated steel walking slab hung from 26 steel wire suspendersThe overbridge was being constructed for visitors to walk to the stadiumIts collapse less than a fortnight before the Games started drew global attractionAn engineering division of the Indian Army constructed its replacement in less than a weekThe Delhi CM announced a `50,000 as compensation for the injured. Cheat day during keto diet damages blood vessels

first_imgHaving just a plate of fries or a bottle of soda while following a ‘keto diet’ may damage your blood vessels, say scientists who warn against going for a ‘cheat day’ while following the popular weight loss regime. The ketogenic or keto diet has become very common for weight loss or to manage diseases like type 2 diabetes. “It consists of eating foods rich in fats, moderate in protein, but very low in carbohydrates and it causes the body to go into a state called ketosis,” said Jonathan Little, associate professor at University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. Also Read – An income drop can harm brainThe diet can be very effective because once the body is in ketosis and starved for its preferred fuel glucose, the body’s chemistry changes and it begins to aggressively burn its fat stores, Little said in a statement. This leads to weight loss and can reverse the symptoms of diseases like Type 2 diabetes. The often embraced ‘cheat day’ is a common theme in many diets. However, researchers found just one 75-gramme dose of glucose – the equivalent a large bottle of soda or a plate of fries – while on a high fat, low carbohydrate diet can lead to damaged blood vessels. Also Read – Shallu Jindal honoured with Mahatma Award”We were interested in finding out what happens to the body’s physiology once a dose of glucose is reintroduced,” said Cody Durrer, doctoral student at UBC. “Since impaired glucose tolerance and spikes in blood sugar levels are known to be associated with an increased risk in cardiovascular disease, it made sense to look at what was happening in the blood vessels after a sugar hit,” said Durrer. For their test, the researchers recruited nine healthy young males and had them consume a 75-gramme glucose drink before and after a seven-day high fat, low carbohydrate diet. The diet consisted of 70 per cent fat, 10 per cent carbohydrates and 20 per cent protein, similar to that of a modern ketogenic diet. “We were originally looking for things like an inflammatory response or reduced tolerance to blood glucose. What we found instead were biomarkers in the blood suggesting that vessel walls were being damaged by the sudden spike in glucose,” said Durrer. The most likely culprit for the damage is the body’s own metabolic response to excess blood sugar, which causes blood vessel cells to shed and possibly die. “Even though these were otherwise healthy young males, when we looked at their blood vessel health after consuming the glucose drink, the results looked like they might have come from someone with poor cardiovascular health,” said Little. The researchers point out that with only nine individuals included in the study, more work is needed to verify their findings, but that the results should give those on a keto diet pause when considering a cheat day. “My concern is that many of the people going on a keto diet – whether it’s to lose weight, to treat Type 2 diabetes, or some other health reason – may be undoing some of the positive impacts on their blood vessels if they suddenly blast them with glucose,” Little said. “Especially if these people are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease in the first place. Our data suggests a ketogenic diet is not something you do for six days a week and take Saturday off,” he added.last_img read more

Centre bypassed Delhi govt in Mayapuri sealing drive Sisodia

first_imgNew Delhi: Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday accused the Centre of bypassing the Delhi government in conducting a sealing operation in Mayapuri area that led to violent clashes between the traders and the security personnel.Sisodia lashed out at Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for blaming the Aam Aadmi Party government for the violence in west Delhi, saying the responsibility of land allocation was with the Centre. “Delhi police is yours, SDM is yours, NGT is yours, DDA is yours and we are blamed. They should have some shame and take accountability for their actions,” Sisodia told reporters. Around 14 officials were injured after clashes broke out between the security personnel and scrap dealers during the sealing drive on Saturday. The drive was started by the Delhi Cantonment sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). “Delhi government ministers were not involved in this decision. They were bypassed by the LG (Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal),” the deputy chief minister added. The operation was conducted days after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had slammed the Delhi government for not taking action against illegal scrap industries in Mayapuri that were causing pollution. Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussein said he was not consulted before taking action. “I am going to write to the LG demanding explanation for his actions,” Hussein said. “Officials (involved in the sealing drive) must be suspended. DPCC employees were involved too. I am the environment minister… no approval was taken from me. Strict action would be taken against all officials involved,” Hussein added.last_img read more
