Every day is a challenge and as young people we need to prepare for it, train for it and test for it. With the advent of the digital media and other emerging technology, the world is becoming smaller, young people are interacting more and understanding what is specific to our culture, what is universal and making peace a choice becomes important. The first half of this year has been hectic and has revealed the importance of traveling to various countries as well as interacting with groups of young people from diverse cultural groups. A thing which stands out when interacting with people is the natural default to terrifying, violent and chaotic state. According to Andrew Solomon a Professor of Clinical Psychology and an author of the book “Far and Away”, Travel is both a window and a mirror. The need for multiculturalism and the promotion of fundamental human rights, freedom, equity and justice is a choice that our new global development agenda should pursue. As young people, we need to do extra in order to conquer dispassionate quest for violence and violent extremism. In Liberia, given the outpouring of support for a violent free elections campaign and elections in 2017 as well as the growing number of civil societies engaging in peace programmes, we have an inspired, talented and diverse youth workforce eager to work on peace and security projects. While the potential for violence remains given the potent mix of poverty, high level corruption, ritualistic killings, mob violence and pursuit of religious ideology and young people around the country do not have access to building blocks for sustainable peace; making peace a choice for young people becomes critical. There is an urgent need to reach young people with facilities and resources that would support their engagement and subsequent commitment to sustainable peace in Liberia.Conflicts, violence and violent extremism in societies are inevitable- it is the result of choices that we make as individuals, as a society and as a nation that makes all the difference. Peace to us at Messengers of Peace-Liberia is a choice and one that everyone should make. The blue print to sustainable peace is clear, everyone-including Government, Non-Governmental Organizations, International Donor Community and the Private Sector should make strong commitment to a set of guiding principles that promote peace. First is the investment in human social security, the meaningful involvement, engagement and active participation of young people in peace and security programmes. We need to put in place systems for early warning and support outreach programmes for peace. While in The Hague, I met with several groups of young people who agreed to making peace a choice and advancing the cause of global peace. It was a privilege to learn from them and to share my experience on peace advocacy in Liberia and across the world. The momentum for global peace has gained a new urgency as the world grapple with airport bombings and insurgency. We must play our part to ensure peace. The choice is ours as young people to make.Until next week, when we continue our dialogue among Peace Messengers-What young people say is their recipe for peace, it is Peace First, Peace above all else. May Peace prevail on earth!Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

Contact Jennifer at firstname.lastname@example.org By Jennifer Hunter, Ph.D., University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension ServiceYou may have noticed that your family may have developed poor spending habits. Your shopping habits are learned behaviors, just like any other good or bad habit. A bad habit can be broken by becoming aware of the choices that have most likely become part of your spending routine. Are you tempted to spend when you have a few extra dollars in your pocket? It is important to realize that stores arrange goods and merchandise to tempt you into making a purchase; stores use sales signs, displays, and salespeople to attract your attention to specific items. The next time you are at the store, try to identify the stimulus that attracts your attention and encourages you to buy, then try to avoid these areas in the future.Other tips for breaking bad spending habits include: limiting the number of trips you make to the store (the less often you shop the less likely you will be tempted to make unnecessary purchases); make certain you have a plan prior to entering the store, know what you want and stick to your shopping list; if you see an item that you would really like to purchase, identify any less expensive alternatives first.Join us in saving this month by making small daily deposits July 1-30 to save $100 in 30 days.To gain spending self-control, identify your spending leaks. Spending leaks are those purchases that provide some type of immediate gratification but do not help you reach your financial goals. Identifying short and long-term financial goals can help you plug your spending leaks. Before making your next purchase, take a minute to ask yourself three simple questions:Is this the best use of my money?Am I buying this to satisfy an immediate need? Will buying this keep me from reaching my financial goals?Sometimes you may recognize the purchase is important; however, you may also realize that you are just being tempted by a sale or the latest gadget, and decide to pass on the purchase. Are you an impulse shopper? Try to never purchase expensive items on impulse. Instead, consider each expensive purchase for at least 24 hours. Acting on this principle will help you have far fewer regrets about impulse purchases, which can put a dent in your finances. One way to establish a savings discipline is save a matching amount in a cookie jar each time you splurge on an item, such as designer coffee. If you can’t afford to save the matching amount, you can’t afford the $4 mocha low-fat latte. If you are often tempted at the store, make a list before you begin shopping. Typically, people who shop with a list, and stick to it, spend much less money than those who decide what to buy once they get to the store. Pre-planning can save hundreds of dollars per year.
Today, we’ll discuss how to create a more cohesive action sequence when dealing with hand-to-hand combat, as well as long-range action scenes.Imagine a movie where in every important dialogue scene, the actors just yell at each other. They blow out the audio levels, their words slur together, they talk over each other, and despite catching a few words here and there, you can’t really understand what’s happening. Or, imagine a dialogue scene in which the words are crystal clear but because of the cinematography, you’re not quite sure who’s talking to whom, where they’re supposed to be looking, or if the actors were even on the same set together. To me, either scenario is some kind of awful. We would never accept this chaos in our film’s important dialogue scenes, so why do some filmmakers find it acceptable to film action sequences with the same disregard?I’ve discussed in detail the first scenario when applied to action scenes (shaky camera, hard to follow action, etc.) in the article Directing Fight Cinematography: The Right Way and the Wrong Way. In this article, I want to cover the second scenario, wherein the action feels disjointed. You may be able to clearly tell what’s happening in each shot but, as a whole, it feels a bit lifeless, like one person just talking to a wall. I’ll talk about how to create a more cohesive action sequence by focusing on engaging your opponents and propelling the scene forward through cause and effect.Action scenes happen in a film because a character must overcome an obstacle, like a dangerous scenario or an evil villain. The action is exciting because our hero must engage in some form of physicality to accomplish his goal. However, if we can’t capture that momentum, it ends up feeling like random shots strung together. This concept can be more easily conveyed with a gun fight. Watch this clip from the film Mile 22.Image via STX Entertainment. We rarely, if ever, get any kind of over the shoulder, where Mark Wahlberg (or his allies) are firing at the enemy. There are few shots of heroes and villains together. Aside from one of the last shots, this sequence almost feels like two different scenes mashed together. Compare this with the sniper scene from The Bourne Identity, the first Bourne film.At first glance, this scene may look similar to Mile 22, but there is one huge difference: each of the opponent’s actions affects the other. In other words, there is engaging cause and effect. We see the reflection of the gas explosion and its smoke obscures the sniper’s vision. We see and understand how Jason’s tactics work and affect his opponent. There is continuous cause and effect that determine each player’s decisions, unlike in Mile 22, where we almost have to be reminded that Mark Wahlberg and company are in danger. This engagement is one reason the John Wick films are so amazing. Despite the heavy use of firearms, the choreography and cinematography capture Wick continually engaging his foes. We see and feel the cause and effect. The enemies are not some distant, faceless threat – even when they wear literal masks. In fact, you see them all in many shots together. The enemy’s firepower influences Wick’s decisions, engaging the two parties in true combat. Imagine the following scene, but instead of a fluid battle, it’s just a series of close ups on each opponent. Without the momentum of engagement, the scene would feel completely flat.Perhaps one of the best references for great action sequences is Spielberg’s work in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Every action scene is exciting and dynamic. Even on back-to-back viewings, you still get a feeling of anticipation as you watch Indiana Jones fight for his life. Spielberg achieves these exciting and dynamic action scenes by deftly capturing Indy’s engagement with his adversaries. If you’re looking to improve your own action sequences on camera, remember to capture a sense of engagement. Don’t take this to mean your action shots need to be engaging – that’s a given. Your opponents need to literally engage each other, and you must capture this cause-and-effect dynamic on screen. Establish that the actions of the heroes and the villains have consequences that affect the decisions and outcomes of the scene, by having each player react and adapt to the situation. AND, you should seek to have a majority of shots feature BOTH the hero and the villain, especially in long-range fights. Keep these two principles in mind when filming your next action scene and avoid the shot reverse shot formula. And remember, these concepts apply to more than just hand-to-hand and long-rang action scenes! They apply to anything in the action universe where challenging scenes can give short shrift to the pace of the story, like chase scenes and heists.Cover image via Lionsgate.Discover more cinematography and filmmaking tips in these articles:Everything You Need to Know About Chroma Key and Green Screen Footage5 Tips on How to Create a Great Short Documentary FilmMastering the Subtle Techniques of the Zoom and the Punch InChoosing Aspect Ratio: A Guide to Everything You Need to Know7 Tutorials on Adding The “Cinematic” Look to Your Videos
